Our Family Christmas 2012

Well, the boys started back to school today, so technically I'm a little late getting the Christmas photos out!

We had a really great Christmas holiday, but it's back to the school/sport/activity schedule now - I think we could have all used another day to sleep in!

Our Christmas break started one day early this year because of snow and very icy roads.
No one was complaining though - the boys had a ball in the snow.

Here Brennan stamped out Merry Christmas Mom to me so I can see it from the office window.

So sweet!

He got out the leaf blower and had a ball blowing snow.

When we got back from Mississippi, we had a bunch more snow.  Thomas enjoyed building a number of snowmen.

On the 22nd Santa came!  We spent a day enjoying our new gifts and getting ready for our week-long trip to see our family and celebrate more.

Brennan was THRILLED to wake up to see that Santa brought him the Wii U that he was dying for.
He was sooo excited!

Santa put Bacon Mints, along with other bacon items, in his stocking.
Yech.

Thomas got a bacon shirt among his gifts.
He's already worn this several times, including to youth group last night.

And a Mine Crafters shirt (it's an online video game world - he and his friends are really into it).

We opened lots and lots of gifts and had a wonderful time spending the day together.

One of my favorite gifts - this note from Thomas.

Infinity hugs for Mom this year.

More Christmas photos coming soon!

2012 Favorites

Happy 2013!!!

Two years ago I started an annual favorites post.
I thought I'd continue the tradition!

1. Favorite Book - Really, really tough call, but I'm going to go with The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty. I couldn't put this book down.  I enjoyed the historical fiction, the twists and turns, and the discussion that month with my daytime book club, As the Page Turns. Surprising read.
Honorable Mentions - Take a Bow, The Gallagher Girls series, Wild, Zippy, Insurgent, and The Book Thief.  You can find me on goodreads.com.

2.  Favorite Movie - This was also really hard - there have been some fantastic movies out this fall.  But, I'm going to go with Pitch Perfect.  I had a great time with my chick flick group seeing this movie, then again later with a friend who had missed it.  Said friend then ordered me the CD and my mom and dad gave me the DVD for Christmas.  Sweet!  It was a fun movie, a real surprise.

Honorable Mentions - The Descendants, Hunger Games, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Amazing Spider Man, Bernie, Moonrise Kingdom, Celeste and Jesse Forever, Argo, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Argo, Lincoln, Les Miserables  (yes, I see that's too many honorable mentions)

3.  Favorite Trip - We were fortunate to go on two BIG trips in 2012.  I really enjoyed our trip out west - the drive from San Francisco to Napa to Yosemite to Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon to Utah was incredible and I really enjoyed the time with the family.

BUT, I would have to say that my favorite trip of 2012 was certainly HAWAII!

Favorite TV Character - Wow.  This is tough.  I forgot about this category.  I thought about Connie Britton's character on Nashville (she's just as fantastic as she was on Friday Night Lights), and Mindy Kaling from The Mindy Project who I absolutely relate to.  We, of course, love everyone from The Big Bang Theory, and I rarely miss catching up on NCIS or Parks and Rec.

But, I am going to go with Sgt. Nicholas Brody from Homeland.  David and I just started watching this show on DVD and I really like his character.  So well written and portrayed by Damian Lewis.

I didn't realize he'd won the Emmy last year.  I really liked him in Band of Brothers too, but he's unbelievably good in Homeland.

Favorite New Hobby - It was easier the last two years when I, in effect, took up one new hobby each year (piano and cooking).  This year though - it's harder to define.  So I'm going to go with "Learning".

In 2012 I learned a lot and took on new challenges that I absolutely love.

I learned a lot about whole foods cooking and I learned a lot through my health coach over 6 months.

I read a lot more non-fiction than I ever have, including books on health and wellness, Asperger's, happiness, parenting, travel, volcanoes, habits, classical music, being grateful, gripping memoirs, and organization.

I spent 3 months studying architects and architecture in our city - in preparation to become a tour guide through the visitor's center.  Sooo much to learn, and so much left to learn.  It is a fascinating new area for me though.

I even took up math late in the year.  I finished one book on "basic math and pre-algebra" and I've jumped into "algebra" now.  It's been a great review and I've actually really enjoyed it.  And now I'll be able to keep up with the boys' homework!

Wishing you a very happy 2013!

Weekend Fun

We had another action-packed weekend.
David and the boys hung in there with me, as they had been warned there was a lot going on.
Now, things slow down just a bit.
In addition to two Christmas parties, an all-day event at church on Saturday for the boys, a Philharmonic concert, appliance shopping, youth group for Thomas, and homework/school projects, we had some excitement Sunday morning at church.
note - fuzzy photos below, grrr.
The children presented their Christmas Musical and did a fantastic job.
It was a story that mixed the true Christmas story with Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".
It actually worked well, and the music was really well done.
Brennan was awesome.
This was Brennan's first year to participate and he did such a great job.
In addition to singing all 9 songs with the group, he was the narrator.
As you know, a Christmas musical takes many Sundays of practice (and part of Saturday's all-day event) and Brennan hung in there. He even hung in there with an ill-fitting shepherd costume.
He did great.

The Audrey Hepburn-look alike was "Edna Scrooge" in the play.

I loved little Matthew as a shepherd. He was adorable.
Brennan had two long narrations, where he stood at the pulpit (his first time).
You might think kids with Asperger's are inherently shy, but not the ones I know.
It's always a hold-your-breath moment when Brennan gets a microphone in front of 200+ people.
He took his narration very seriously, incorporating many gestures and even a slight bow after his narrations. Everyone said afterwards that he did just great. And may have a future as an evangelical preacher.
During his second narration, however, he lost his place in the script.
He was slightly frustrated and embarrassed as he flipped through the pages, but handled himself so well. I have no idea what I would have done if it were me. Or what any other child would have done in the same situation. He never broke or asked for help, he just kept looking.
My natural instincts were to run across the church and help him, but he had to figure out a way, in front of all of those people, to handle himself. It could have gone either way. One of the play coordinators eventually went up and helped him. Instead of fussing about it or getting even more upset, he said a simple "sorry bout that" into the microphone which elicited a great laugh, and then he continued with his narration as if nothing had happened.
A very proud parent moment!!

We got tons of feedback from the congregation after church about what a great job he did.
So proud!
And after the musical it was time to introduce the 17 newest members of our church - our graduated confirmands.
The kids and their mentors went up front to be welcomed in.
Thomas's mentor, Charlie, as Elder was introducing them.
Our youth pastor surprised the kids with letters from the pastors who had baptized them.
Most of the kids were baptized as infants, so she put a lot of work into tracking everyone down.
Thomas received a beautiful letter from the associate pastor in Memphis who baptized Thomas (and me, and Brennan). She's in an important district leadership role now, and it was really nice to hear from her.
This is a great group of youth, and I'm so happy that Thomas is part of this wonderful group.

During the Sunday School hour I led my last official job as Children's Elder (after 4 years I move to the Youth committee beginning next year) and led the Happy Birthday Jesus party for all the preschoolers and elementary aged kids.
It's a chance to celebrate the Christmas Musical excellent work, and celebrate the reason for the season.
Didn't Kroger do a great job on the cake?

A wonderful bunch of little ones as well!

Phew, now on to the last 2 weeks of school and work before a nice Christmas vacation!
