After Hours - Chalk Board Picture Frames

We have a wonderful After Hours program at school that I got to participate in yesterday.

For 10 weeks in the fall and then 10 more in the spring, parents and teachers can sign up to offer a variety of classes for kids after school.

It's first come-first serve and the classes fill up pretty fast.

We have community volunteers who come in as well and teach sports or hobbies.
Some of the most popular classes are the running club, photography, art classes, and languages.

My good friend is the coordinator this year and she needed more craft classes for younger kids (K-3) so she asked me to lead 3.

The boys and I led our first one yesterday - Chalk Board Picture Frames.

School photos just came out so we thought it would be fun for the kids to paint frames to hold their new photos, or to give to a loved one for Christmas.

I got a variety of frames from Wal-Mart and Joann Fabrics for the project.
Everyone got to paint two frames and I sent them home with a little box of chalk.

I just used chalk board paint that I had at home which I bought at Wal-Mart.
That stuff lasts forever!
The beauty of chalk board paint is that it dries relatively quickly.
So we painted, then had snacks while the frames were drying.

Thomas (who would make a great camp counselor some day!) led a couple of games too.

By the end of our hour together, everyone's frames were dry and they were able to write on them with their new chalk before taking them home.

Some chose to paint the sides, others didn't.

I wasn't sure if the kids would know what a chalkboard was because I think most have been replaced by Dry Erase or Smartboards in our school.  They all did, so I didn't feel too old.

But none of them had chalk at home although they think they might have when they were younger.
I think the box of chalk was more exciting than the frame itself!

Good morning. Trip took me to the lake to get away and get my head on straight. Since our church down here is seasonal, I am spending the morning reading blogs. Your boys are so handsome, Bonnie. I love their school pictures! Good times @ the swim meet. I know you must be so proud of Brennan! *and* he composes music, too!

I think it's funny that the kids were so excited about the chalk. Good point about the dry erase boards....

Shelley saw an antique typewriter and asked me if it was a steampunk computer, LOL! :/

Have a blessed Sunday, my friend!

That was a cool idea, Bonnie. The one who'll receive the frames will be more appreciative 'cause the design consists of kids' handwritings. They can be considered as "doodles." Thanks for sharing this nice idea. :D

What will happen if you find the thing used to protect your pictures itself is getting damaged due to improper handling and carelessness shown by the user?
